My father use to take various business trips and it always mind boggled me (at 10 years old) that he never actually saw anything besides the office and a hotel. When he traveled to Paris he brought me back a World Cup 1998 scarf (?) that I’m sure he got in the airport.
Now that I’m older and making a few business trips I realize how difficult it can be to get out and do something when you’ve spent a whole day in meetings and (nowadays) a mountain of email to catchup on. Luckily for me I was able to sort thru my inbox and with the time difference - I was able to get out of the hotel and explore (on foot) Provo, UT.
I made a beeline for the BYU campus, because I figured that was the most walk friendly (they had sidewalks as opposed to the major roadways near the hotel). And it was…campusy. And glorious. And gorgeous, with views of the mountains and lakes. It appeared to be freshmen orientation, (ie young looking people wearing their landyard and with ID attached to it) in little groups doing team building activities.
There is just something electric about being on a college campus (even Purdue! Okay Not IPFW!) The architecture is interesting, the people watching is fascinating and there is just the je ne sais quois about these places.
Really it was all a bit intoxicating. PUNS!
